NEW BELGIUM RELIEF FUND
THE EVENING POST LIST.
A meeting of Paekakariki railway employees was held on Sunday for tlie purpose of discussing suggestions for raising subscriptions in response to the recent appeal on behalf of the Belgians. It was unanimously decided that each member so willing should contribute Is or more, if desiring to do so, each fort- - nightly *pay day, and arrangements were made to forward the subscriptions to the proper quarter fortnightly until the end of the war, or longer if necessary. It was also decided to invite outside assistance from local residents to augument the donation, and it is hoped a generous response will result. An entertainment committee of railway officers and residents was formed to arrange entertainments locally, the proceeds to be also given to - the Belgian Relief Fund. A correspondent, who signs herself " Flower Girl," points out that there are hundreds of lovely gardens in and around Wellington, and she suggests that a "Flower Day" be instituted. The flowers could be sent to the Town Hall on a Friday,, made up into bunches by a committee of ladies, and sold on the Saturday. She is sure that growers would be glad to give the flowers and the public to buy them. "It is the proper way, to do it. All will have to bear the burden," remarked a councillor at the meeting of the Wanganui County Council on Friday, when a motion in favour of a tax to assist the Belgian sufferers was proposed. , The motion was well supported, bub the opinion was expressed (states the Herald) that the Government should decide upon which articles to impose the tax. The motion was carried unanimously. His Excellency the Governor has extended his patronage to the Assault-at-Arms and display of Jiu-Jitsu, which is to take place in the Town Hall on Friday evening, 26th instant, under, the auspices of the Wellington railwayrnen, in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund.
