APPLES IN STRONG DEMAND
CHIEFLY FOR EXPORT. («r TELEORAPU— rRESS ASSOCIATION.) NELSON, This Day. There has been an extraordinary demand for apples for export in the Nelson district. During the past few weeks buyers have literally chased one another thiough the district snapping up every available case. South America is exert" ing a strong claim on New Zealand apples and would absorb many more times as much fruit as is available. There has been a particularly heavy crop of apples this year, and growers have been recei\ing between 6s and 7s a case from Wellington. Buyers havealso been operating from other parts of New_ Zealand where the crops have been a failure a.nd to some extent have in» creased the demand, but South America is the greatest market. Since the market there has been opened up, fruitgrowing in Nelson has made rapid strides. During the past few years the new orchards planted represent 4500 acres, or 728,000 trees. It is estimated there -will be a million and a-half cases for export in a very few years' time.
