DEFECTIVE CHIMNEYS

TO HIE LDITOU. Sir, — In you Saturday evening's edition you give an account of the destruction by fire of a country hotel and other buildings, with the statement the cause was believed to be a defective chimney. Now, does it not seem absurd that in this day of advanced science and skill such a reason should be so often given for a disastrous fire. There used to be accidents and loss of life in connection with scaffolding until a scaffold inspector was appointed. Is it not time that an inspector of chimneys for newbuildings was appointed by our Government? It seems that both the Fire Underwriters' Association and our legislators are asleep on this question.— l am, etc., G.J.P. Wellington. Bth February.
