CONCESSIONS TO TROOPERS
The concession to be made to troopers by the Union Company, particulars of which appear elsewhere in this issue, will also bo made by the Kuddart Parker Company. The following telegram was received at the local office to-day from the general manager at Dunediii :—: — " Grant return passages, saloon or steerage, at single fare to troopers visiting lelations, who produce certificate from commanding officer." An inquest was to be held at 4.30 o'clock this afternoon concerning the sudden death, while working on the Kaifcangata yesterday, of Alfred Ellis, a wharf labourer, who resided at Wadestown. Ellis collapsed suddenly while shovelling coal, and the caiihe' is surmised to be heart Liikne. The price of foodstuffs was the subject of a discussion at th*»<innnal meeting of the Wellington Freezing Workeis" Union, held at Petone las,t evening. The following resolution was canied: — "That this meeting of woikers protests against the inactivity of the Government in preventing the extraordinary rise in the price of foodstuffs, and calls upon its members to attend a mass meeting of protest, to be held in the Town Hall."
