MR. LUKE

Quite a, large crowd assembled at the Newtown Library when the final results of the Wellington South contest were announced. Mr. J. P. Luke addressed the assemblage. He congratulated Mr, Hindmarsh upon having been re-elected for the constituency. It showed, lie eaid, that he held the confidence and esteem of the electors for what he had done, and the electors looked forward to him to do further work on their behalf in the future. As for himself, while ho was a. defeated man, h© did not f«4 in any way discredited. He knew from, the beginning of the contest that certain forces were operating which it would be difficult on his part to overcome, and he was particularly pleased tliat during Mie campaign everything had been gone through with a feeling of good will and an absence of bitterness. To say, how ever, that he wa* aot a disappointed man would not be correct. With his 1 long association with the city and his experience in public lito, he felt that such an asset made the difference between the successful candidate and him* self a narrow one. He thanked all who had «upported him, and he also thanked his committee and hi* secretary (Mr. Frank Charlton), and all friends ior their services. At Mr. Luke's invitation, cheers wer« given for Messrs. Hindmarsh and Williams. Cheers were also given for Mr. and Mrs. Luke.
