PREVENTS GERMANS RUSHING A BRIDGE. THEN BLOWS UP THE STRUCTURE (Received October 6, 10 a.m.) OSTEND, sth October. A sub-lieutenant named Hiernaux, in charge of a battery, gallantly prevented the Germans from rushing a strategically important bridge over the Scheldt connecting Termonde with Gaembrun. With a battery carefully hidden he swept the, troops off the bridge. A second party of Germans, wrapped in mattresses, advanced, and were shot down, and a third attempt failed. Then the German artillery found the range and routed the battery. Hiemaux was killed, but his mine succeeded in up the bridge.
