RUSSIANS IN FRANCE
PERSISTENT RUMOURS IN ENGLAND DENIAL BY RUSSIAN EMBASSY. LONDON, Bth September. There have been persistent rumours [ for a fortnight that a large force of Rusi fiians, via Archangel^ traversed England j and landed on the Continent. The idea wa« ridiculed locally, 'owing, to the magnitude of the alleged forre; but a Berlin telegram published in Rome states that a Russian force has been landed in France. (Received September 10, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, 9th September. The Ruseian Embassy denies that any Russian troops are in France. FORCE SAID TO BE IN BELGIUM NEW YORK, Bth September. Mr. Strauss, a former k American Minister to Turkey, has arrived here. He states that it is an undoubted fact that Russian forces have reached Antwerp through England. ARRIVAL THROUGH SCOTLAND. SYDNEY, 9th September. ■ Official sanction has now been given to the publication of the following message, dated New York, 4th September : — "Incoming American tourists report that a large number of Russiau soldiers arrived in Scotland, via the White Sea. They were brought by the railways t through England and shipped to Ostend to reinforce the Antwerp garrison." Tho story was not believed when it was first published owing to yellow press activities; but the Ottawa Military Department says there is now no reason for doubting it. Apparently tho Allies aro meditating a move based on AntI werp.
