CAMP NOTES

♦ — , — MEN AT PALMERSTON INCREASING THE ARTILLERY. TO THREE FOUR-GUN BATTERIES. With the infantry and mounted rifles absent at their field manoeuvres, the camp yesterday presented rather a deserted appearance (cays the Manawatu Standard), The artillery and ammunition columns were at general work, but definite training is hung up pending reorganisation. From the scanty information that can be gathered at. present, it appears that in place of the eix-gun. battery that it was originally decided to send with the Expeditionary Force^ there will now be sent three batteries of four guns each. The extra six guns necessary to carry out this reorganisation arrived yesterday morning, and are at the camp. In consequence of the change, about 100 extra men will also be required. Some of these will, no doubt, be drafted from the ammunition columns already in camp, but recruits will be required to fill their places, A new allO' cation of officers and N.C.O.'s will be necessary in connection with the reorganisation. In accordance with the instructions issued on Monday, the Mounted Rifles Regiment left camp in the afternoon at 2 o'clock. Their route lay through the Square and up Main-street East when they were the centre of much public interest. Their destination was in the vicinity of Feilding, and, like their infantry comrades, they spent the night in tho open. Yesterday morning was devoted to field work, the brigade returning about midday and passing through the Square on their way back to Awapuni. The public had another good opportunity of seeing the column, which attracted much attention. To-day one company of infantry will be engaged at target practice, while the remaining three companies will go east of the Manawatu River for attack practice. Trooper Movie was discharged from the Hospital yesterday. Trooper H. Mcffatt was admitted on Monday, and Trooper Banger (Gisborne) was 'admitted yesterday morning. Moffat is suffering from a slight ailment and Ranger from bad eyes. CONTINGENT SPORTS FUND. Learning that no special provision had been made for recreation on board the transports, the Wellington Pickwick Club has been interesting itself in collecting a. supply of material for that purpose. By subscriptions and dotations of material the club has been able to put aboard the ships leaving Wellington enough sports goods, consisting of boxing gloves, Indian clubs, dumbbells, punching balls, and also indoor games and magazines, to help in some way in affording relaxation necessary to keep the troops fit during the voyage.
