HUSSARS' TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE

MANY TIMES UNDER FIRE. REMNANT SPLITS UP. (Received September 8, 8.40 a.m.) BOULOGNE, 7th September. Lieutenant Drake, of the 11th Hussars, who, with a corporal, has arrived here, states that' their squadron was guarding tho routes from Mons. They entrenched themselves^ and fired on the German cavalry. They then gradually fell back, hoping that the Germans would pass a wood where French troops were supposed to be posted. For some reason the manoeuvre failed, and they fought a rearguard action. They dismounted at intervals and held the 'Gei'fiiaiis back by rifle fire. They suffered heavily from the Gei'* man artillery, and when they reached Hendecourt, near Cambi'ai, only half the squadron remained. They followed a railway cutting to a. crossing, where German infantry opened fire, shooting many of the men and horses. Forty rode into a neighbouring street, but weie again trapped. At the end of

two streets which ran at right angles and were barricaded, the Germans from the^ houses opened a devastating fire. The remnant of the troops reached a wood and split into parties of two, some of which gradually reached the coast. TA squadron of cavalry consists normally ot 150 men and six officers.] A BRITISH BATTERY'S PLIGHT. LONDON, 6th September. Tho Press Bureau reports that in the fighting on 26th August at Le Cateau, a whole British battery was killed or wounded except a subaltern and two gunners, who kept up the fire throughout and were Unhurt.
