IRANSOMS DEMANDED
BY GERMANS AND AUSTRIANS. PARIS, 7th September. The Germans have demanded a ransom of £280,000 from Lille, £20,000 from Armentieres, £28,000 from Lens, £40,000 and 100,000 cigars from Amiens. PETROGRAD, 6th September. A Red • Cross doctor states the Austrian general demanded 200,000 roubles (nearly £21,000) from the town of Ka-menetz-Podolsk, the capital of Podolia, fifteen miles from the frontier, otherwise the provisional head of the town would be hanged and the town destroyed. He declared that the citizens had fired after hoisting the white flag. As the bankers and wealthiest members of the populace had left, only 6000 roubles (£640) was raised by sacrificing jewelled crucifixes and church plate. One colonel, however, returned the levy, and said the Military Council had over-ruled the general who had been wounded Upon entering the town, and wanted to imitate t,he Prussians.
