HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLED REPORT. The Department of Agriculture, Industriesj and Commerce has receiyed the following cablegram from the High, Commissioner for Now Zealand, London, dated Bth August. (Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot) :—: — Meat Generally. — About the beginning of this week the meat rriarket was greatly affected by the declaration of war. An attempt was made to obtain very high prices, as high as B£d per lb being demanded by holders of chilled hinds, with a result that all descriptions advanced in sympathy. The excitement on the _ market has subsided. It was not justified, as a large supply is at present in store. Demand has considerably fallen off on account of high prices. Mutton.— Canterbury mutton. 5d per Ib ; North Island, 4|d ; ewes, 4|d. Lamb. — Canterbury two's, 7d per lb; heavy-weight four's, 6|d ; other thaQ Canterbury, 6|d. Beef.— Quotations for New Zealand are < nominal. Holders are keeping back owing to the expectation of purchases for the Government. New Zealand hinds, 7d per lb; fores, s£d; chilled hinds, 6d»;' fores, 4£d. Butter. — The market is firm at the advance. Conditions are now moio normal. Danish, 140s to 150r, per cwt; New Zealand, 140s to 1455; Australian, 130s' to, 140s; Siberian. 130s to 140s; Irish creamery, 135s to 144?. Cheese.-— On account of war conditions the cheeso market has be»n irregnlav, but closed firm. Canadian and jSVw Zealand wliite and coloured, 78s to 80s per cwi. Estimated Canadian cheese stocks at 4th August in v London, Liverpool, and Bristol were 163,000 boxes, against 209,000 boxes at the same time last year. New Zealand cheese stocks at 4th August were 10.500 crates, against 11,000 at same, time last year. Hemp. — The market remains very depressed. No transactions reported. Cannot; give qudtatidns during present condition of the market. The output from Manila for the week was 26,000 bales. Wool. — Business is practically suspended, and quotations are nominally unchanged. Grain. — The markets are more settled. Australian w»heat, 45s c.i.f. ; flour, 35s ex store ; New Zealand oats, 30s c.i.f. ; New Zealand beans, 'f.a.q. (new crop), per 5041b. 375 ; New Zealand pears (partridge), per 5041b, 545. There is more inclination to do business at these prices for immediate delivery. No business has been done with forward shipments. It.
