FRENCH CLUB

Mr. Stuart Menteath presided at the .meeting of tho French Club on Friday. Miss M. Wilcox opened with a pianoforte solo, which was followed' by a recitation by Madame Decleene, senr., of Sully Prudhomme's beautiful poem, "La Vague estßrisee." This lady showed considerable dramatic talent, and, being encored, responded with the "Fragment delaNuitdeMai" of Alfred deMxtsset. Mi*. A. Spencer, who was in excellent voice,- sang "Mignon" and "Qui Sait?" accompanied by Madame DechanetMackLntosh. An historical sketch describing the changes that have taken, place in the mode of courtship in France was contributed by Madame L. Decleene, who, speaking entirely without notes, invested her subject with a touch of humour that gave it a (Special charm. Mesire. A. Grierson and H. F. Lat-tey delivered interesting readings, the former of a poem by Voltaire, and the latter of an original sketch regarding an event that occurred some years ago in India, "L' Arrivee dcs Sauterollee. ' ' Miss Mead recited prettily "La Grandniere," and the Hon. J. Rigg a quaint poean of the 17th century, written by GhaTles Riviere dv Fresny, "Leu Lendemaine." An interesting and amusing story of his voyage to New Zealand in a sailing ship was told by the President, and this completed the excellent programme. The meeting closed with the singing of the "Matseillaise."
