V.M.C.A. NOTES
Sunday last was observed as Mother's Day. Although tho day was so boisterous a very large audiomio paHiered in tho Gymnasium Hall undor tho presidency of our Mayoress, Mrs. J. P. Luke. She was supported on tho platform by M)*S.* W. F. Massey, Mrs. Low (Presid •" Ladies' Auxiliary), and Mrs. J. Ilotjv n'- nresident Ladies' Auxiliary). j\" s. t»' :T 3, of the Presbyterian Oiphanage gave beautiful address The musical ijiograromo was contributed to by Madame Mueller, Miss Muollbr, and Mr. S. L. Exton, who each sang most appropriate items. At tho Strangers' Tea, following the above gathering, ovor 100 were present, reprosenting ten countries. The debate on the Biblo in Schoola arranged for this week was postponed until next week , on _ account of the wretched weather conditions. The basement of the local building is to be transformed into a miniature rifle range. A miniature rifle club is in course of formation, already twenty-fivo applications for membership having been received. , Basketball wae sent on. its merry course last Wednesday evening uy iw^ teams, captained by Messrs. A. C. Kitto and E. Threadgill respectively. The lattor team was successful, scoring twontythreo goals to its opponent's twenty. Tho game was most strenuous and exciting. Eight teams are expected to comprise the Basket Ball League. Mr. J. Harry Lang has consented to lecture whilst m Wellington on "India and its Problems." Mr. Lang commenced his Auckland meeting on Sunday last, and arrives in Wellington on Saturday, sth June. Quite a stream of visitors has_ passed through tho local association during tho last weak from the Tainui, Willochra, and Tahiti. The V.M.C.A. immigration authorities in the Old Country give cards of introduction to all young men on emigrant ships, who are wishful of claiming advice and assistance of associations in the new lands to which they are booked. On each day next week, excepting Wednesday, tho Rev. A. T. Brainsby will address gatherings of men from 1.25 to 1.55 in the V.M.C.A. Assembly Hall. Mr. Alex. Jameson, National Secretary, will bo in Wellington next week to meet the National Executive. Any baseball players not yet attached to a club should make enquiries at the V.M.C.A. Rooms. m . Mr. E. M. Ryan returned from Territorial Camp work last week-end.
