SOUTHLAND R.C. MEETING OPENING DAY.
INVERCARGILL, Ist April. On the opening day of the Southland K.O. Autumn Meeting, the totalisator handled £13,212, compared with £11,145 on the corresponding day last season. A number of horses fell in the' Steeplechase, among them Red Troon, whose rider, F. Ellis, had his right leg broken near tho thigh. Ellis .has, not long returned from Christchurch, where he badly broke the other leg at the Grand National fixture. The remaining rosults are : — Southland Cup, of 300 soys; one mile and a quarter.— 2 Gapon, 8.13> 1 ; 3 King Torrent, 6.11, 2; 4 Rongahere, 6.7, 3. Also started— l Gold Coin, 3 Parable. Won by a short neck. Time, 2min lOsec. Southland Steeplechase, of 200 soys; two miles and a half.— 7 Renee, 10.11. 1; 2 Kelp, 10.8, 2; 1 The Brewer, 11.6, 3. Also started— 4 Corso, 3 Red Troon, 6 The Gunner, 11 Zingabee, 10 Tommy, 5 Blacksea, 8 Northern, 12 Waimahaka. Red Troon, Zingabee, 'Waimahaka, Corso, Blacksea, and Northern fell. The Gunner lost his rider. Won by six lengths. The Brewer was twenty lengths away third. Time, smin 31see. Flying Handicap, of 125 soys ; six furlongs.—l Obsono, 8.7, 1; 3 Icilma, 6.12, 2; 2 Peter, 7.5, 3.
