THE PRICE OF MILK TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,— ln your issue of yesterday th* \ appeared a letter signed "Subscribe.,' referring to the above Your correspondent asked, "If the councillors who were objecting to the price of milk, would object to the price of beet at its present charge." May I ask what this has got to with the question? The trouble of tho increased charge lies ir this— The milk vendors of Wellington, up to Slst March, paid, ex rail Wellington, 7^d per gallon and their charge was 16d per gallon to the public. From Ist" April they pay 9d per gallon, ex .mil Wellington, and they have increased t their sale price to 20d pcl 1 gallon. In I a nutshell, whore they paid under 2d per * quart they charged 4d per quart Milk,; now coets them 24d and their charge is \ Sd. lam very glad some of the councillors had the sense to propose the muni- , cipalisation of the milk supply of this town, and I hope it will evehtuate. Olio f word ■ before 1 close : It is not the farmer, who has to go out in all weathoi ' ' and take the risk of his valuable co\v> dying, who is putting up tho price. The' fanner's increase is l^d per gallon 5 the middleman's increase is 4d per gallon* If bad debts are their trouble— well. I<£ there be a cash and booked price.-, am, etc.. l HARD HIT.; 2nd April, 1914. |
