GHOULISH WORK DESECRATING FRENCH GRAVES
SEVENTY VAULTS OPENED RELIGIOUS OBJECTS STOLEN, (By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright.) PARIS, Ist April. Four persons have been arrested for despoiling seventy vaults in the Pero-la-Chaise cemetery of chalices, pyxes, and art objects. Some have been recovered 5n antiquarian shops. The same gang is suspected of despoiling Mademoiselle Lantelme's tomb j in 1911. [Mdlle. Lantelme's vault was opened in December, 1911, and it was reported that all her jewels, including a pearl necklace valued at 400,000 francs, had beon stolen. Subsequently, the jewels were found beneath the pillow in the coffin, enclosed in an envelope.] FRUITLESS NIGHT SEARCHES. HOW THE ARRESTS WERE MADE. (Received April 2, 8.30 a.m.) PARIS, Ist April. Thirty-six keepers at Pere^ la-Chaise for many weeks made night time searches, but they were fruitless. Detectives were then posted in wine ehopu in the vicinity, and they overheard the conversation of two of the 'gang. One was followed and was seen making chalk marks to certain tombs. Subsequently, when an attempt was made to open these tombs three men and a woman were arrested.
