PETONE COUNCILLORS UNSYMPATHETIC. A circular was received at the Petone Borough Council last evening from the Minister of. Defence (Hon. James Allen) asking that the council find suitable employment for conscientious and religious objectors to the Defence scheme. The circular stated that such a scheme would be of considerable benefit to the community. ■ The objectors could be made to do the work required for a time equal to that devoted to military training by the Territorials. Immediately the circular was read it | was apparent that councillors had no sympathy whatever with the proposed scheme. It meant, remarked Councillor Townsend, that Petone would become a military prison. He moved that a reply oe sent to the effect that the council could not take any action in the matter. Councillor > Anderson seconded the motion, remarking that any man who dodged his military duties was not much' good to them. The motion was agreed to unanimously.
