GUM RESERVES SCOPE OF ROYAL COMMISSION.

In view of the fact that the gum ieserves in the Auckland Peninsula total 200,000 acres, the Royal Commission set up by the Government to inspect and classify -kauri gum reserves in the district, which opened to-day, has a, formidable task before it. The Commission 13 empowered to ascertain: — j (1) Which leserves contain a yield of gum to justify their retention as kauri gum reserves; (2) Which reserves are sufficiently exhausted of gum to justify the removal of the reservation and the opening of the land for settlement purposes. The Commissioners' report is due j within forty days. The itinerary was fully discussed ot this morning's sitting, and it was finally decided to commence at; the extreme North and work southwards to Auckland. The members will accordingly leave on Monday. The tour will be through the counties of Bokianga. Whangaroa, Bay of Islands. Whangarei, from Waipu to Dargaville, Kaihu, Slatakohe, Mangawai. Wellsford, Warkworth, Helensville.'aiid the south.
