CRICKET FINALS COMMENCED

: HIDDIiESTONE NEARLY REACHES HIS CENTURY. The weather on Saturday afternoon was anything but ideal for the commencement of the finals in the senior cricket competition. A thick southerly drizzle drifted across the Basin Reserve at 2.30 .p.m., and it Was after 3 o'clock before iJie teams which decided to go on were able to make a start. The principal match was the contest between North and Petone, the former requiring a two- • .poinb win to be equal with the latter. Should this eventuate it will necessitate a play-off between the two teams. The light was bad the whole afternoon, and by the time stumps were drawn dusk had almost . settled down over the ground. The result was that the late batsmen did not have a fair chance. The match between East B and Cential was abandoned, the weather being deemed too .urisuitable. In the' other big matches ,tbe results were:— North v. Petone— North, first innings, 22U "East A v. Old Boys— -East A, first , innings, 201 for four wickets. Hutt v. "Victoria College— Hutt, first innings, 149; Victoria College, first innings, 49 toy two wickets. NORTH v. PETONtf. The hero of North's first innings was ■fliddlestone, who when Tregear caught, him off Brice was just 9 off his century. ■He gave a splendid exhibition, giving ,vei'y few chances. The bowling did not appWr to trouble him at all, and his strokes were clean and varied._ He _ hit four 4's and several 3's, and hia innings lasted just on a couple of hours. ■ WagStaffe and Jones opened for North to the attack of Smyrk and Brice, but Jones had just hit a single when he was clean bowled by Brice, Wagstaffe had better fortune, *and he carried his total "to 28 (including a brace of 4'g) before Smyrk captured his bails. The tail, owing to the badly failing light, put up a very poor showing, the last three wickets accounting for only 13 runs, Crombie being dismissed with a duck. The last North wicket was captured just at the call of time. Southall was absent. Scores :-» North.— First Innings. ' EAST A y. OLD BOYS. ■In the East A-Old Boys' match the former team went < out to bat first, Baker and Gribbes opening. Baker handled his bat in his usual clean style and cut and drove the bowling very attractively. >He hit one for a five, and included m ' -his total Were a quartet of fours. iWhen he was a,t 78 he failed to return 'to his crease quickly enough and was neatly stumped by Hindmarsh. Gibbes partnered him for. some time and also found the bowling to his liking, until his wicket was captured by Mason when his innings was at 49. Midlane was ;the other big score, and he hit tho fowling about with all his characteristic .vigour. His innings had not closed at j fbe finish of the day's play, when he had reached the half-century.
