ON THE CONTINENT. SITUATION EAGERLY CANVASSED.
(TIJIES AND SYDNEY SUN SERVICES.) LONDON, 27th March. The Continental press is eagerly canvassing the situation. It is asserted that the absence of attention to foreign affairs in Great Britain is tending to weaken the strength of British diplomacy in the Councils of Europe. Sir John French's resignation has astonished the French people, who expected him to lead the British expeditionary forces in the event of a European war. HISTORY RECALLED. LONDON, 27th March. Mr. Harold Cox recalls that 15,500 persons in May, 1832, signed the covenant to pass the Reform Bill. Wellington was confident that he could quell the rebellion, but the officers and men refused, stating that they were ready to suppress disorders, but not to destroy the liberties of the people for the benefit of a politician. Wellington confessed that he was beaten.
