CORRESPONDENCE THAT LIGHT AREA

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— Mr. G. Shirtcliffe, in his letters recently appearing in jour columns, seeks to exculpate himself by "reflecting" upon me, because I "reflected 11 upon somebody else. This form of r-rgu-men f may appeal to "busine^ men, and be r.n additional reason why "business men" only should be returned as councillors. The real questions are :—: — (a) Whether Councillor James Godber or Mr. Shirtciiffe read to the committee, Messrs. Carmichael, Cohen, and Hie Hon. F. M. B. Fisher, the report of Mr. S. Richardson and Mr. M*Ooll? (b) Whether Councillor James Godber or Mr. Sbirtcliffe read to the council on the 24th of September, 1907, the reports of Messrs. Richardson and M'Coll? fc) Whether either of these gentlemen explained to the committee or council the difference, as far as the council was concerned, between the limited "right-of-way" and the "proposed light area" 1 (d) What has Mr. Shirtcliffe hhnaelr to say to the following words contained in the report of Mr. S. Richardsondated the 22nd of May, 1907: "Attached hereto is a report (Mr. M'Coll's), in the reconiinendation of which I concur, and. I cannot too strougly point out that any extension past Mie portion marked 'offices' on tlxe plan will work injuriously to the interests of the lighting station." (c)' Whether the light area is "past the portion marked offices." (f) What answer has Mr. Shiricliffe to Mr. M'Coll's report and particularly to the following words: — '"In conclusion, I beg to point cut how jjecefsary it us that all space available is. required for generating purposes both in the present and future, and " regret that owing to out limited area I cannot favour th« increased depth of cart entrance." {%) Whether tho light area i.s an "iucreased depth of cart entrance." (h) What answer has Mr. Shirt rliffe to the following words contained in tho report of the Tramways Board dated as lato •as the 16th Fehruary^ 1914,, and signed by Mr. W. H. Morton :— "The board, however, is still of opinion that it was improper th. the first place to exclude the area from the lighting station." — I am, ofce., • A. H. HINDMARSH. 27th March.
