But for an unpromising outlook during the forenoon there would no doubt have been j a record attendance, and, even as it was, the stands and enclosures were amply populated. The stipendiary stewards (Messrs. M'Mahon, Gordon, and Duncan) were present, and several matters of minor importance attracted their attention. The rider aftd trainer of Ineuru were asked to explain why the mare failed to begin with her usual agility in the opening event, and, after hearing evidence, it was decided that her' slowness to get going was attributable to | the inexperience of her rider (H. Richards). The rider of Grey Guard in the Maiden Hack Race was cautioned for careless riding, and S. Reid was severely cautioned for taking Firing Line into his wrong position at the post. The going was fast, and, generally speaking, the racing was interesting. Not a, single favourite scored during the afternoon, and Deeley, who was in great form, piloted no fewer than four "winners. When the totalisator closed on the Cup, Mescal was favourite, the next most fancied ones being Monologue, Stepney, and Manawakaha. On the field being let go Vladineau was soon in front, and with three furlongs gone she was several lengths clear of Lady Volga, Monologue, and Leonta. Ab the top turn was met with, Vladineau retired beaten, and Lady Volga appeared to meet with trouble and was sent back. ""Stepney and Manawakaha now moved up, and at the final bend Leonta, Moutoa Girl, and Stepney were racing in close order, whilst Otahu was creeping up fast next the rails. Moutoa Girl cut down Leonta inside the distance, and won a fine race by a bare length, Otahu .being threequarters of a length away third, half, a. head in front of Stepney, who was followed by Lady Volga and Mescal. The time registered— viz., 2min 9 l-ssec— has only twice been, beaten—by Sfargueriie (who won in 1907 and who ' put up • a record of 2min 6|sec) and by Bonnie Boy (who got home in 2min BJsec last year). Epworth was favourite for the opening event, but he began slowly and was never dangerous. Dearest was mildly favoured by her r> art y» but she looked backward, and was last practically throughout. Ir-euru ran to the front after getting off last, but 3he", too, did not look ready, and when about twothirds of the journey had been travelled she was done with. Ratana came at the right end. and won easily by two and a half lengths. A rough lot contested the Maiden Hack Race, of which Queen's Post and Lady Lud proved quite unmanageable. After the last-named had broken the tapes more than once, she was badly left, whilst Queen's Post did not leave the mark. His Eminence got through next the rails at the home turn, and scrambled home by a head from Grey Guard, whilst Hoopoe, who scarcely looked ready, was three-quarters of a length away, third, and the next to finish were General Madero, Reconnoitre, and La Motte. Huia was in most demand for the Hurdles, but after jumping badly, the best he could do was to run second to Jackman, who scored easily. Rill got hung up in the tapes, and so lost a few lengths, but she was both backward and sore, and could not have won in any case. Florist, who ran third, was making her first appearance as a jumper, and shaped well. Lubriline had an easy victory in the Carnavon Hack Race, and Papa.maramara had no sort of difficulty in beating a hot favourite in Firing Line in the Pukenui Welter, in which Sir Fisher and Patroness followed the placed division home. Guiding Way and Braeburn were the best backed candidates for the Parewanui Welter, which proved good, however, for White Crane, whose form was much superior to that which she showed at New Plymouth. Tetikura was in command 'from White Crane, Austin, and Guiding Way until the straight was entered, when White Crane out him down, and scored easily by twb lengths. Manitau was fourth and Guiding Way fifth. Aratiatia was expected to go near winning the concluding event, but he did not begin as well as usual, and was never nearer than fourth, in which position he finished. Powder Fox was practically in front throughout, and, stalling off a strong challenge from Brunswick, he landed the stake by a bare neck. Tyson was squeezed out after going about two strides, and nearly lost her rider (O'Shea). Private news has been received to the effect 'that whilst riding at Mornee Valley on Saturday, H. Gray had a fall, presumably off one of Mi. Eric Connolly's horses. Luckily he escaped uninjured, and left for Sydney on Monday. Whilst in New Plymouth this week, Mr. F. C. Davis purchased Di Gaina, who raced consistently at the Egmont and Taranaki meetings. The consideration was 500 guineas, and the horse is to be shipped for Australia next week in the Manuka.
