CIVIC SPIRIT ISLAND BAY'S EXAMPLE MUNICIPAL ELECTORS' ASSOCIATION'S MEETING.

Ample evidence of that civic spirit without which substantial progress along lines municipally is not attained, was contained in the annual report of the Island Bay Municipal Electors' Association, the annual meeting of which was held last night. Mr. A. E. Odlin was in Ehe chair. The report stated that during the past year ' the efforts (jf the association for the improvement of Island Bay had met •with good response from the residents i geneially. It was encouraging to note that there was distinct evidence of public interest in the association's efforts to promote the welfare of the district. The progress made with the culvert during the year wa3 satisfactory, but it should be the policy of the association to leave no stone unturned in its effort to get the culvert completed right up to Wakefield Park during the coming year. The assurance of the Postal Department had beeri given that a slot telephone would be erected at Island Bay as soon as the telegraphic cable had been extended to the district, say, by July next. In the matter of tree-planting, the association had assisted, by means of working bees, in planting in the zig-zag at Cam-street, and in tbja school grounds. The City Council had carried out a good piece of work by planting the zig-zag at the north end of Clyde-street. The executive recommended that 'further efforts be made in this direction during the coming planting season. The incoming executive was also recommended to continue its efforts to improve the equipment of the present volunteer fire brigade. During the year the executive waited upoa the City Council, its sub-commit-tees, and its officers at various times on matters connected with the welfare of Island Bay, and although these depu-. tations had not always met with immediate success, the executive was of opinion that some good had been done, even, where its requisitions were not granted, by keeping the requirements of this district prominently before the council and its officers. A very successful gala wa6 held on the beach on Saturday, 14th March, in conjunction with the newly-formed Life-Saving and Swimming Club of Island Bay. Voluntary donations were received, and there w.ould be a small surplus in hand towards beautifying the bay. The report was adopted after various members had spoken enthusiastically of the past year's work. Officers for the ensuing year were elected sb follow : — President, Mr. A. E. Odlin; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. B. Coy, C. Hall, G. S. Chisholm ; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. E. J. Collev assistant-secretary, ' Mr. T. Pender; auditor, Mr. A. E. Herron'; executive, Messrs. W. H. Potts, E. H. Barton, A. Wilkening, J. W. Hill, E. Boocock, J. Wright, C. J. Lockwood, W. Kerr F. N. vVilloughby, and G. Bodell. '
