HATAITAI RATEPAYERS ASSOCIATION ADDRESS BY DR. NEWMAN, M.P.

Dr. Newman, M.P. for Wellington East, attended the -executive meeting of the Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association last evening^ to explain the position of a school site for that ' district. Mr. A. Leigh Hunt, pointed out the fast development of Hataitai made it imperative that a site should be procured at once. Dr. Newman stated that the Minister of Education had definitely promised to visit, the district on his return to Wellington. the discussion on civic affairs - Dr. Newman ' delivered an interesting address, 'particularly on the working of motor-buses in London and Germany, from his own personal observations; and stated, that on account of the success of the system in the Old Country the formation of expensive tram lines had ceased. He gay« several instances where such a system could be applied to Wellington suburbs with advantage. Wellington crty came in for severe criticism from a town planning point of view, with its streets all based on the same alignment principle. Illustrations of modern residential suburbs, with their street gardens and cur-ved thoroughfares, were . depicted. The right angle corners in our busy streets would, in course of time, be a menace to traffic. By mere accident they had Winder's corner, with its rounded formation, as a small example of what might have been at little Toss of building space, but immense benefit to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Dr. Newman was accorded a vote of thanks for his address.
