AUSTRALIAN TOUR BALANCE-SHEET CRITICISED.
The sub-committee set up to report upon the balance-sheet presented by the New Zealand Council for the Australian tour presented its report, which was considered in committee, together with correspondence from the council bearing upon the matter. Eventually the secretary was instructed to wiite to the council in the following terms : — "That my committee is strongly of opinion that this association should have been supplied with more details of the estimated expenditure in connection with the tour of the New Zealand team in Australia, and that the allowance to players should not have been arranged for without tho sanction of the associations concerned in the guarantee ; further, that this association expresses the opinion that payment to players under circumstances such as those of the late Australian tour < is most undesirable, and that the explanation contained in the council's letter of 21st March, quoting Rule 19 (in regard to compensation for wages lost) does not bear on 1 the question." The committee made the following further comments on the balance-sheet, and directed that they be embodied in the letter:— ( . ( , "Selection'" Committee's expenses : £20 15s sd. We think that the principle of charging the expenses of the Selection Committee against the tour is a wrong one, and these expenses should be borne by the council in future. "Groundman, £5 Is ; ground bowlers, I £3 lls 6d ; dressing-room attendants, £7 ss ; scorers, £2. Further information desired. "Gratuity of £16 to council's representative in Australia : In our opinion this is not v legitimate charge against the tour. "Auckland players' expenses. £32 4s Bdy .Details of this item desired. .Tips, £34 15s 3d : This item we consider extravagant, more especially bearing in mind the fact that players received an allowance of 5s per day."
