WAKEFIELD-STREET FIRE A WAREHOUSE DAMAGED.
A fire was discovered in the Victoria Buildings, a three-storied structure owned by Laery n.nd Co.. in Wakefieldstreet, shortly after 7 o'clock last evening, and resulted in considerable damage being done. The outbreak oiiginated in the lift on the first floor, and when first noticed had a good hold. The Fire Brigade, however, in response to the summons, soon arrived upon the scene, and getting quickly to work had the flames under control within a few minutes. The damage to the building and Laery and Co.'s stock is estimated at about £500. The building, which is valued at £8000. is insured in the Royal Exchange office for £6000. and the stock in the same office for £4150. The first floor is occupied by Messrs. Pickering and Abel, cap manufacturers, whose stock and plant, which were badly damaged, are covered by a policy for £600 in the London and Lancashire office. Messrs. Massey, Harris, and Co., who occupy portion of the ground floor, also suffered considerable loss through their large stock of machinery being badly drenched. This lobs, however, is covered by insurance. Messrs. Haydon and Lubranski. clothing manufacturers, the occupiers of the top floor, also had their stock and plant damaged by fire and water. Their risk is covered by a policy for £400 in tho Royal office. The origin of the outbreak i» unknown. Fortunately the flames were confined to the one building, as, had they spread to Laery and Co.'c bdnd adjoining, there would doubtless have been a very serious conflagration, the bond being well stocked with spirits. Don't wait until the fire fiend visits your property. Protect yourself now by a policy with the British Dominions General Insurance Company, Ltd., Panama-street, Wellington.— -Advt.
