CHINESE & EUROPEAN WOMEN
10 I'HB EDITOII. Sir,— ln your isbue of the 24th hist, you have given a biiei' resume of a letter received by you from a correspondent in which he makes certain charges against the Chinese in Haimng-street, and I think in fairness to the Chinese the facts should be published lo refute completely your correspondent's rash statements. The facts of this particular case are ottese : A Chinese was charged on an information laid by the police two days after the occurrence, with having as-saulted-a white woman, ami, he was convicted and lined. The assault was committed while he was under the influence of liquor — a thing which is almost unfortunately an everyday occurrence amongst the Europeans, as can be verified by our Court records. He had been living with this woman for three yeara — had given her all his wages, and, as a matter of fact, has treated her with every kindness, except for this one lapse. " After the conviction the line was paid by his compatriots^ only .on condition that he left the woman and went away from Wellington, and this lie has done. From these faots you will see that there can be no suggestion of any Chinese "leading respectable women to their hovels." The only European women who go to the Chinese part of the city are those who have been "cast off by the degenerates of our boasted British race." No "traps" are laid by the Chinese for "respectable girls." I think it would have been fairer — more British — if your correspondent had enquired into the true facts before rushing hysterically to the press as he has done and making wild and inaccurate statements. , I would ask your correspondent: "is it fair to blame all the Chinese for the faults of one or two of them?" — I am, etc., A BRITISH SUBJECT. 25th March, 1914.
