MATCH AGAINST MANAWATU. (UY TfcI,EOI(\PH.— I'HFSS ASSOCIATION) PALMERSTON N., 23rd March. The match between the Australians and Manawatu commenced on the sports ground this afternoon, shortly after 3 o'clock, in threatening weather, with a cold easterly wind. Trtimper captained the visitors and M'Lean led Jhe local team. ■" G. Greet and M'Vicar opened the batting for Manawatu. After an unpromis ing < start Hodder and Luxford were associated and put. up a fine stand. At the tea adjournment they were still together. Hodder was eventually taken at first slip by Armstrong, after playing a good innings for 51. Some slow play followed, but eventually a drive by Bartlett brought 150 up. Crawford was now put on to bowl, and, off his firsb ball, Bartlett drove one, but smart fielding by Trumpet caused Luxford to, 'be run out. He had made 39 by careful cricket. With the total at 163 Crawford bowled Bartlett' with a beauty. None of the other batsmen stayed long. The innings lasted three hours twenty minutes.
