Evelyn Butlor, charged with importuning ih Egniont-street on Saturday was convicted and ordered to como \i[> for senlenco when callcd_ on. Mairy Johnstone, charged with a similar ott'enco in Victoria-street on Saturday night was sent to tho Salvation Army Home for bix months. For insobriety, two first-offenders were convicted and discharged. Joseph Burns, who pleaded guilty to drunkenness, resisting tho police, and damaging the arresting constable's uniform, wws fihGd 40s, in default seven days' imprisonment, and ordered to pay tho damago (10s), in default a furtho rterm of two days' imprisonment. William Barr, charged with having been, drunk while in charge of a' homo and cart in Karori-road, was convicted and ordered to pay 8s 6d cost 6, in dofaxilt 48 hours' imprisonment, and for having used obscene language ho was fined £3, with 4s costs, in default fourteen days' immont. For breach of prohibition order John .Oliver Armstrong was fined £3, with 7s costs, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. John Jamos Thoma*, charged with failing to maintain his wifo and children (£26 10s arrears), was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, tho sentence to be suspendbcl so long as he pays off tho arrears ati tho | rate of 10s a week. For failing to pay maintenance of hifl illegitimate child, Ernest Henry George Solway wae fined 40s, in default soven days' imprisonment. Thomas i Newton Withers, for, breach pE a prohibition order, was fined 20?, in. default seven days' imprisonment, Ah Joe was brought up on remand charged, with having been found with opium in his possession, and also with, smoking opium, on the 14th inst. Mr. Watson appeared for accused, who plead* ed not guilty to both charges. DetectiveMason gave evidence that when he and Detective-Sergeant Cossolls visited th© house occupied by accused and Charlie. Young Sing they found a room full, of smoke. It appeared to have been fitted up for opium smoking. There wore two beds on the floor, and at tbe side <*£ each was Iho ordinary paraphernalia for smo-k* ing opium, together with opium in tine. On Ah Joe they found £10, and on. Young Sing £270. Ah Joe dehied that he had been living on the premises, bub admitted that, ho had occupied ono of tho beds. Detective-Sergca-nt Cfusells added that the room was full of opium smok©, and the pipe found in the room was warm at tho top. Defendant denied thut h© had smoked _ opium : he merely went to ccc Young Sing on business. H« did ,1164! go upstairs to the room whero the opium was found. Charlie Young^ Sihg, who had pleaded, guilty fo similar cnargea, bore out this statement., His Worship entered a conviction against Ah Joe of smoking opium, and imposed a fine of £5, with costs £1 8s; Young Sing w&a fined altogether £25, with £2 9s costs. Mr. Maclaurin prosecuted on behalf 06 tho Customs Department.
