MILITARY TRAINING

SUGGESTED ■ CONFERENCE OF PARTIES. • Lord Curzon made a significant speech on compulsory military training on' 22nd January in making a presentation to Lord Roberts on behalf of the National Service League. His lordship said: — "Speaking with some knowledge, I believe we are on the evo of some great awakening on the matter of military training. I believe the greatest men of the country are thoroughly aware of tho appalling imminence of the danger by which we are confronted, and, conscious that our resources are inadequate to meet it, were^ prepared to mako a move iv the direction we have in view. I should not be surprised if, at no distant date, there was an approximation of •views between tho two parties ordinarily severed, and there is nothing I should welcome more than a round-table conference cm this matter between the leading men of both parties. That compulsion in somo form or another will form part of our military system I en* tertain no doubt. I only wish our distinguished guest will live to See it." The presentation to Lord Roberts took tho form of a silver statuette symbolical of " armed peace," and a oheque for a little under £5000, which is to bo devoted to the purposes of tho National Servico League. i The gift commemorated liis lordship's 80th birthday last September. The presentation took place at Aps!ey flouse, tho residence of tha Duke cf Wellington.
