NEWTOWN SCHOOL

m ANNUAL PICNIC AND SPORTS. The pupils of the Newtown School, tt gether with their teachers, parents, and friends, numbering in all over 1000, held their annual picnic at Newtown Park yesterday. A programme of sports was gone through, numbers of the prizes for these events being presented by friends or supplied by the committee. Each child in the infants' department was presented with a toy, and also, through the kindness of Mr. With a bag of sweets. Results of the chief events are as follow :— School Championship— Boys : Fair•bairn, Wr'^ht, and Co.'s cup, won by T). Johnsmi. Girls i Mr. Savldge'a gold brooch atta necklet, won fay Zita Baiter. Boys' Races— soyds (Mr Crengel'a prize), Johnson 1, Rouse 2j 75yds (Mr. Collie's prize), Johnson 1, Rouse Ej 100 yds,' Johnson 1, Pollock and Rouse (dead heat) 2 ; 200 yds, Johnson il, Pollock 2j long jump (Mr. fetter* sen's prize), Grenside 1, Humphries 2i half-mile w a lk, Gr Hickling 1, W., Hickling 2; steeplechase, G. Hickling ;i, Johnson 2, Pollock 3. Girls Races— soyds, G. Hodgman 1, Zita Baker 2; lOOydfi (Mrs. 1 Boxall's prize), Z. Baker 1, M. Humphries 2} book-on-head walking (Mr. Castle's prize), I. Knight 1, M. Fisher 2. In addition to the above open races each class held humerous races.
