EDUCATION MATTERS

* — MONTHLY MEETING OF THE BOARD. The monthly meeting of tho Wellington Education Board was held yesterday. Mr. R. Lee presiding. Others present were : — Messrs. J. Kebbell, 11. Freeman, J. G. W. Aitken, W. Allan, T. Moss, and W. 11. Field. Notification of a grant of £375 for additions to J;he Upper Hutt School was received from the Department. If the amount prove insufficient further application is to be mad-e. The financial statement showed a debit balance of £1886 19s 8d as against a debit of £946 17s Gel the previous month. Receipts for February totalled £10.118 15s 6d. Authorisations amounted to £3052 17s lOd. Resignations were received and accepted as follow : —Misses M. L. Marten (Pouatahi), I. lorns (Normal), A. Murray (Masterton), Mrs. M. Dupree (Shannon), Mr. F. Robertson (Mount Cook Boys ). Leave of absence was granted the Toilowmg: — Miss C. Ro6s (Petone D.11.5.), Miss M. Brown (Ekctahuna), Mies D. Stuckey (Levin), and Miss Mason (Mount Cook Girls'), and Mr. W. Bennett (Reikiorangi). WORKS AND FINANCE. Grants were authorised at the following places :— Taueru, Island Bay (ventilation of classroom). Greytown (new gutters), Mitchelllown (relaying of drains), Korokoro (porch extension), Porirua (repairs and additions to echoo' and residence), Te Aro (repairs, etc.), Kaiparoro. Unauthorised expenditure tothe amount of £9 12s was approved. Tho foreman was directed to visit and report regarding the condition of tho residence at Cross Creek School, tt was decided to install the high pressure water service at the Upper Hutt School, when the service is available. In the meantime tho committee is asked to make the tanks serve requirements. A tenant at Levin who applied for an, extension of time to Ist March for payment had his request granted. The cieTk of works was instructed to make the necessary arrangements for additional conveniences at the Training College owing to increase in the number ol students. The amount mentioned Was £25 10s. Library subsidies (up to 9d per head) were approved on the following amounts, subject to compliance" with tho Education Department : — ■Reikiora.ngi, £2 ; Fernridge, £5 0s Id ; Ohariu, £1 12s 3d ; Hastwell, £3. An application for addi-" tional allowance for cleaning at the Petone Technical School was declined.
