SLAUGHTERMEN'S STRIKE

CONTRIBUTION FROM AUSTRALIA The Australian Meat Industry Employees' Union (Victoria branch) has forwarded a cheque for £200 " towards assistance in the New Zealand dispute." 1 The cheque was received by the secretary of the Slaughtermen's Federation (Mr. M. J. Reardon) by to-day's mail. The letter accompanying the cheque contained dther interesting information. The note read as follows: "I am in receipt of your cablegram asking for contributions towards assistance in your dispute. This branch has at once donated £200, which I am enclosing in this letter. I have wiTed all the Other States to at once deal with the request, and expect an answer at an early date. You have the support of the whole of the federation in your dispute, as Queensland has already signed an agreement with the employers in the export branch, providing for the payment of 28s 6d per 100 for 'dressing down' and 2$ od for 'sticking, down,' which makes 30s 9d per 100. We are also making a demand on all our employers for 30s per 100 for slaughtering sheep and lambs, "as our present agreement expires in a month or two." The letter was signed by C. Anderson, general secretary of the federation and secretary of the Victorian branch. The representative of the Gear Company, when questioned today as to whether the eviction of the old hands on Saturday had affected the tallies, said that there was practically a full board at Petone, and it was expected that today's record of carcases would be within a couple of hundred of the best tally done since the works resumed killing. It is understood that the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren) ib prepared to accept noticeof motion respecting the incident of his ruling at last meeting of the council. The committee have approved the plan and recommend the immediate adoption of same so as to give the department an opportunity of making a start with tne work during the coming season.
