TTORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Hutt Borough Council was field last evening. There were present: The Mayor (Mi\ E. P. Bunny), and Councillors : Knighti Hodgins Kempthoine, Clendori. Roofs. Ball, Hobbs, and Dawson. , " In reference to the discussion aboutthe re-decking of Melling Bridge Mr. J. Dawson (the designer of the bridge wrote stating that he would be pleased to meet the council and would- give diia notice of the evening he could come. A further sum of £1000 was remitted by the Public Trustee of the loan of £3500. The Valuation Department reported having sent on to the Treasury a voucher for the payment of £337 10s, advance on 1 account for the current year 1 . The application of the Hutt Cricket Lncket Club for a wicket in the centre of the Recreation Ground was referred to' the Grounds Committee. The engineer (Mr. W< J. Roche) in his tortmathtly report stated in reference to eastern drainage section 5, that the sewerage of Park-avenue was now complete including all house connections. About five chains of sewer had been laid in Old Military-road. The manholes had still to be plastered and some straightening of the road done. The cost of the whole work to date (Main-road and Parkaventte) including all plant had totalled £603 14s 3d. The amount available in the new loan for the same work was £700. The work of erecting the shed over the pump was practically complete. ■ Hie kerbing and channelling of Bridgestreet had been begun early In tho week. ' He proposed to proceed with the similar work in Whites-hie and the RiddifordLodder dedication after finishing in Bridge-street. Ihe retaining wall at 1 Mr. Clendon'a Corner at Bridge-street had been constructed at a cost of £10 4s 8d (estimate £10). The report was adopted. The following recommendations of the Works Committee were adopted: — That the committee had inspected the' whole of the paths recently tarred and eandad, and had found them generally in good conditiou. Considerable improvements wore noticeable, and it is recommended that the paths be left for the present to see if the colder weather would improve the setting of the tar. A few small pieces of the paths are to receive further attention. That two sumps be put down near Mr. Lynch's property and that in this connection a gravel path sft wide be constructed. Tho estimate for the work is £21. That tho Gracefleld Company be informed that the council is taking all possible steps to comply with the agreement with Messrs. Ward Bros, at the earliest possible date, and hopes to remove the shed about the end of July. That the attention of the police be called to the damage that is being done in the borough by larrikins. That the complaint by Mrs. Knight in reference to drainage at back Waiwetu be referred to the engineer. That the matter of the footpath and street lamp referred to in the petition from Buckleystreet) Alicetbwn, be referred to the engineer. That Mr. Fell bo informed that if the council takes any further steps in the matter of getting Rotokahi Creek filled in, or of allowing it to be filled in. he, or his client, will be informed of such intention. , . In reference to the accident to Mr. Macaskill 'sustained through a being opened up in the Main-road, a reply is to be sent informing Mr. MacaskiH that the engineer reports the open trench was properly guarded and lit with two lamps which Were s"t.ill iir position' At 11 o'clock at night, and that if they were subsequently inte'rfored with' it was without the knowledge or sanction of the Council, and therefore, the council disclaim any liability for the accident referred to. . , A number of recommendations were made by the Works Committee in connectionwith residents failing to connect up witH the drainage scheihe.
