MAGISTRATE'S COURT

This morning's list of week-end drunk and disorderly persons was a long one. Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M., was on the Bench. While Under the influence of liquor Robert Fitton wandered into an unoccupied house, 161, Taranaki-street. He was found there, and was charged this morning with the trespass and the consequence of being deemed to be a rogue and a vagabond. He pleaded guilty, and Mi 1 . P. J. O'Regan, on his behalf, urged that the offence was due to the effects of liquor. Otherwise defendant was a respectable working man. The Magistrate convicted defendant and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon. Charles Armstrong was charged with using threatening behaviour in Farishstreet. He admitted it. Sub-Inspector Sheehan explained that accused had been fighting on Saturday afternoon. He and his opponent weie arrested, but the other man made his escape. Accused had previously been convicted of a similar offence. His Worship imposed a fine of 40s, in default seven days' imprisonment. The list of unsober persons included five first offenders, dealt with in the usual way, also Lena White, James Hutchison, Charles Stevenson, .and John Byrne upon whom were imposed fines varying from 5s to 20s. For breach oi a prohibition order Evelyn Butler was fined 40s with the alternative of seven days' imprisonment. For disobedience of a maintenance order, Florrie Harris was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. Charles Chapman was ordered to pay 3s a week towards maintenance of his brother. Arthur Harold _ Smith was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for disobedience of a maintenance order, warrant to be suspended while 10s is paid off arrears weekly. James Stafford Adams was ordered to pay 8s per week for one year from 24tl> February for the maintenance of his son, with £9 for past maintenance. Mr. A. Fair appeared for the applicant (Mrs. Adams) and Mr. H. E. Evans for defendant. Olaf Johnson, charged with disobedience of a maintenance order, was remanded; to appear to-morrow.
