(Bt TSLtQHAPH— SMOIAt, TO tßt POBT.) PALMERSTON N,, This Day. Th 6 meeting opened untter ideal sum* nier conditions, and before a record at' tendance. Despite the wealth of herb' age on the course, the going was firm and , fasti " After the first' three events had, been run winners were exceptionally hard to find, the Cup and Juvenile Handicap falling to rank outsiders, whilst neither Imagination nor Thrave had a very large following.. Generally sneaking, however, the racing was full of ; interest; . A middling pace was set during tll6 early stages of the Cup, and, the field 'being well-bunched, several candidates— in Abiding, Bronze, Sinapis, and Mtra— appeared to ' get a bad passage, -Sir Solo was the quickest to ,move\, but Was soon headed by Sea 1 Queen. With kittle more £han a furlong gone,, however, -Moutoa jSirl took command, and led past the ■ftWnds from Merriyoni^, Brown 'Motxi, and- Sea Queen, whilst Ceylorr was lying ISsfc. The position was not • materially altered until about half < a mile from home, where SnvSolo and Mifa, made a forward move y Bronze now, be,ing ,well pocketed-in on the rails. Sir Solo was lucky enough to get" up on the inside at the' horne 1 turn, and, setting sail after Moutoa Girt, lie cut her down a few strides' irom the post, and won by threequarters of a, length. Merrivoma, Who had moved in very scratchy style in the preliminary; ' was nearly two length's away, • followed by Master Laddo and Goodwin- Parky whilst the last -two to finish -were ' Bronze and Otahu, > Ermengarde, Blue Lake, and Semaphore were the most fancied candidates for the Fitzherbert Handicap, the winner or which, however) -turned up in Imagination, who came from last- but one, and scored in impressive style. ,The field had not gone far before Piriwai, who was; placed on the outside, cut across towards the rails, and badly interfered with several of her opponents. Rangitaua was one of the first to suffer, but the inside division—including Ermengarde and Semaphore— got squeezed ujp, and were so caused to lose ground. Ermengarde finished at a great pace, and promises -to be very hard to dispose of in the classic event to-day. Many think that with reasonable luck she would have won, but in consideration of the unfavourable position that Imagination came from this may be doubted. Gladiole failed to stay on, as did Makara, whilst Blue ' Lake, who was always well placed, was fourth. The opening event was rather a fiasco, and when Divinia, who played up as usual, broke through the tapes, some of the others also jumped aWay, and three of them— namely, Audtihi Lockwood, and Immensity— completed the whole course. Though allowed a few minutes to recover, this, of course, guiLe spoilt their chances, Divinia was teventually left at. the poet, and Allegory got home first by a head. Sleacombe won the Hurdles comfortably by ihfee-quarterp of, a length, Gold Bird, who jumped faultily, t«ing three lengths away. Alecto made a, runaway race of the Gillie Hack Handicap, iri which Lucerne, who was ridden by her ownefc (Dr. Page't), finished fourth, The- Juvenile Handicap resulted in a> great battle between th« placed horses, who were separated by bare heads, Portraiture being fourth. Bonny Helen' wa#a good favourite, but she) seemed ouite at sea, and never looked the least dangerous. Nakuatu took' the Tararua Hack Welter eaaily enough, after getting the worst of the start, at which St. Been stumbled badly, and dklodged Oliver, who luckily escaped with a bruise or two, and landed Thrav© a winner of the concluding event. Prosper, who played up at the post, was very lame on returning to ecale, •.•-,-
