LAND SALE

(BT TRLEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) BLENHEIM, This Day. The Dumgree estate, Awatere, of 12,500 acres, subdivided into fourteen blocks, was auctioned here before a large attendance. Twelve sections were sold in areas from 28 to 650 acres at prices from £5 to £22 per acre, and all to local buyers.

Mr. R. Hanlon, J.P., presided at a sitting of the Mount Cook Court this morning. Edwin Gray and George Alder Stratford, charged with drunkenness, were convicted and discharged, and for the same offences Robert Muirhead was fined 10s', or forty-eight hours' imprisonment, Alexander M 'Donald 40s or seven days', and Martin Samuelson 40s or seven days'. Two first offenders were convicted and discharged, and one first offender, who failed to appear, was fined 10s, with the option of forty-eight hours' detention. * At the corner of Manners and Cubastreet on Saturday evening when Constable Smith was arresting a drunken man a crowd of some 500 peraons gathered, and for a- time made trouble for the officer. He was, however, soon reinforced by Sergeant Treaby, Detectives Lewis, Mason, Demnsey, and DetectiveSergeant Casselk. The first offender was secured and taken towards the Mannersstreet Polke Station. Then another man constituted himself "master of the revels/ and charged the police. He was also secured, and this morning was sent to gaol for a month by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. All the time that the arrested persons were being taken towards the station the crowd, or Tather the larrikin clement in it, shouted instil tingly. References were made to Waihi, and various epithets were hurled at the police. Some people iseem to think that it is a mild offence ; to interfere with a policeman whilst he is in the execution of his duty. This is quite wrong, and the Bench from time to time has warned people who* have come before the Court for this sort of misdemeanour. The accused, who was sent to gaol this morning, had apparently made a hobby of obstructing the police, .for he had numerous offences of this nature to his name. Some time ago the 'Wellington City Council was presented with a gift of about 10,000 trees, of one 'variety, from Hastings. These were planted oil the slopes of Mount Victoria, promptly withered do\*n, and wero described as a failure. It will interest lovers of trees to know that probably 95 out of every 100 of these trees have now commenced to shoot tip just above the surface of the ground. The trouble is that they are choked with grass, but the expenditure of a few pounds in clearing a small space round each would give them a splendid chajice to advance during the summer weather. This i?a matter which is worth the attention of the council. The box plans for "The Messiah," in which Aladame Kirkby Lunn and Mr. Andrew Black will take part, open at the Dresden at 9 a.m. On Wednesday. The officials of the St. John Ambulance Association are very pleased with the splendid work of the ladies on Saturday, Ambulance Day. An advertisement of thanks appears elsewhere. Eighty-six water colour drawings are now on view at Messrs. Wm. H. Turnbull and Co.'s auctions rooms, 27, Panamastreet. The works are 1 by well-known British arid Continental artiste, and will be sold, practically \sithout reserve, on Friday next. Those in search of Christmas presents are advised by the auctioneers to pay a visit to the gallery. The band of H.M.S. Drake will play in the Hospital t grounds to-morrow afternoon, commencing at 2.30. A _ collection will be taken up in aid of Christmas festivities for the patients. Messrs. A. L. Wilson and Co. will hold a sale to-morrow, at 2 o'clock, at the residence, Farm-road, Northland, on. account of Mrs. Meale, who is leaving for Sydney.
