REPLY TO COUNCILLOR ATKINSON

Sir,— The paragraph which appears in this morning's New Zealand Tiftieß should satisfy Councillor Atkinson, and lead him to place a little restraint 'on his disposition toward sarcasm, which lands him bo often into trouble.— l am. etc., D. IThe paragraph was us follows:— in a, made by the Mayor to a Times reporter regarding the question of tho Waterside Workers' Hand and its request for a subsidy, occurred the following remarks: "Speaking from memory, the members of the (finance) committee present were, Councillors HindmaMh, Frost, Atkinson, and Pitssgernld. To my as tonishment when I presented the clause from the chair, as is customary, mem berß of the -committee who- knewithe whole position were the first to rise and move against the clause in open council." The phrase "members of tho committee k has led to the illfefehce tliftl the Mayor referred to "all" of the members. As a matter of fact, in justice to Mr. M'Laren. it should be stated thot ih the course of the Interview he excluded from his vomarks the councillors (including Councillor Atkinson) who hdd been consistent in their attitude. The employment ot' the phrase "members of the committee." without Btating which particulhr members, has resulted in a little playful tilting at the Mnvor through a misunder standing for- which he is not responsible.]
