COUNCILLOR ATKINSON IN TROUBLE AGAINCANON GARLAND AND THE TEACHERS

, to ihi iDiron. Sir,— ln the statement which he made in your columns yesterday regarding the application of the Waterside Workers' Band for municipal patronage, the Mayor of Wellington says: -^"Speaking from memory, the members' of the [Finance] Committee present were Councillors Hindmarsh, Frost, Atkinson, and Fitzgerald. To my astonishment when I presented the clause from the chair, as is customary, members of the committee who knew the whole position were the first to rise and move against the clause in open council." The friend who called my attention to this paragraph had drawn the inference from the mention of my name which probably every other reader would draw, viz., that I, among others, was guilty of the inconsistency of which the Mayor complains. Please, therefore, allow me to explain that I both spoke and voted in the council exactly as I did on the committee, and that I was and am quite satisfied that the Mayor did the right thing throughout. I wish that he could be equally correct when he starts talking about me to the reporters. But, whether through omission or commission, the fates seem to be against him, and it makes me quite sad.-~I am, etc., A. R. ATKINSON. sth December.
