M.P.'S WEEK-END AT WANGANUI

A party of members of Parliament arrived early on Saturday morning, in response to an invitation by the Chamber of Commerce to spend ihp week-end in Wanganui. At 9.30 the visitors divided into two parties, one going in motors to Mangamahu and the other by the Parapara-road. Tho visitors were impressed by the potentialities of the district, and predicted that, when the Raetihi railway is put through, ami the necessary roading done, tho district will rank as one of the most important in Neto Zealand. In the afternoon the party were taken to various points of interest in the town, and in the evening a big banquet was held. An njvrivrr excursion took place to-day, but the weather was very bad. and, to a great extent, spoiled the rally.

An address upon the subject. "Hmnpn. Slavery," was delivered by Professor Mills in the Adelphi Theatre last, evening. Mr. J. A. M'Cullough wrs in the chair. The Professor souglit to disprove the idea that the wage system wai natural and inevitable. As a matter of fact, he said, in its full manifestation' it had existed for only nbout half a Century. The militarism of inter-tribal warfare had led to the private appropriation, of land and also human beings as slaves. Direct slavery had at length beeit dropped in Europe and America beoause it proved_ unprofitable : but human slavery still existed under the wage system. Only the form and not the ersjitce had been changed. Emancipation could be achieved only by the workers themselves. Musical items were contributed before the address.
