CORRESPONDENCE DEFECTIVE ROADS & CROSSINGS

' *6 THE EDITOB. Sir,—- 1 would like to draw attention to the state of certain roads and crossings in and about the city. In particular I will mention {he condition of the road at the junction of Austin and Majoribanks-street, and at the former's intersection with Pirie-street. To cross the spaces on a motor bicycle or in a car is no doubt good for the liver,* but very bad for springs and tyres. I would also draw attention to the sumps and fire plugs. These, ih many cases in Majoribanks and Austin-streets, are fully six or eight inches above the level of the road. I suppose motor» cars and cycles are not to be considered in these matters, but I think they could be improved some if the council would adopt other methods of levelling inequalities in the roads. The present way seems to be to shovel some metal in the i hole, and trust to the traffic to roll l \ " l ~~? v^ cn Be ldom happens, as most I of it finishes up in the gutters. Finally, I would draw attention to the crossing at the Patent Slip, where I the rails, etc., are a positive danger.— l am, etc., ¦ MOTOR Wellington, 18th September.
