TO-DAY'S FOOTBALL

CIVIL SERVICE CUP. PUBLIC TRUST^AGAIN WINS. After a very strenuous even game, in which extra time had to be played, Public Trust succeeded in defeating Public Works in the final of the Civil Service Inter-Departmental Championship this morning at Miramar. The only score in the game came in the first few minutes of ¦ "overtime," the rule being ( that if at' the end of two spells the sides are equal, the first to score afterwards wins the match. That was the way tho game went to-day. This is the third year in succession Public Trust have won through. Last year they defeated Advances to Settlers, and the year before Railways, in both cases by fairly substantial margins. This year they had a real battle to retain their laurels. On the whole Public Works had the best of it in the matter of play, but neither side was able to score. Really good football was shown, particularly by P. J. Ryan and Faire for Trust, and Paton and Sotheran for Works. It was really only Ryan's unwearying and dogged defence that saved Trust for the final rally. Paton exercised great generalship in directing his men, and Works had hard lines in not scoring at least Once. There were several attempts at placed goals from marks and penalties. The game was watched with enthusiasm by a crowd of barrackers. The end was sudden. In the " extra " time, Public Works got off with a rush and made the pace hot to their opponents' base. Here a quick movement in retaliation saw Elliffe give the ball to Faire on his own side the halfway. The Victoria College representative got under weigh, and outsped everybody, running in behind the posts —a magnificent eflort. Ryan landed a goal. Faire was " chaired " off the field. Mr. W. J. Meredith was referee.
