BARMAID AWARDED DAMAGES
Therfc was a curious sequel at Sheffield County Court on Bth August to a mistake made by a barmaid in opera* ing a cash register. Elizabeth Sutherland, the barmaid in question, sued Frand Howson, landlord of the Surrey Hotel, Westbar, Sheffield, for damages for malicious prosecution and false- imprisonment . Through touching the wrong key of the cash register, it was said, she caused the machine to indicate 4s too much. To rectify this she afterwards struck keys for lese than the amounts placed in. The landlord accused her of theft, and had her arrested. She was hi custody two days, but at the quailev feessions the .jury stopped the case during the first witness's evidence, and she Vrae acquitted.
