ST. THOMAS'S PICTURES.

A fresh and attractive programme of a diversified character was presented at St. Thomas's Hall, Newtown, last evening. One of the most interesting dramatic films was entitled "Their Hero." "Their Lives for Gold" was another appreciated picture of a sensational nature, cleverly acted, and "A Domestic Treasure" was a very funny comedy-drama. A scenic gem was contained in "An Excursion to Roman Ruins," and an industrial study of educational interest was contained in "The Cotton Industry." Other pictures of interest were: — "The Reedham Boys' Figure Drill," "Thou Shalt Not Covet," "Out of the Night," and " Zigoto to the Rescue." The' programme will be repeated this evening.

Some illuminating figures, showing the increase in the cost of living in Tasmania, and furnished hy the Chief Inspect ' tor of Factories (Dr, J. S. Purdy) in his annual report just received : — Wages in nine trades (including bootmakers, bakers, buildine tradesmen,,, and carters) have increased by 32 per cent, since 1905. On the other hand, the purchasing power of the sovereign has been depreciated by the higher cost of-living. It is shown that since 1905 the prices have advanced as follow :— Clothing 91 per cent., provisions 28 per cent., house rent 55 per cent. In other words, the 4 .place that could be rented in 1905 for 5s to 10s is now (1911]P ,8s to 15s a week. TheFe have also been other extraordinary rises in the prices H of food and clothing. The straw hat that cost Is in 1905 costs 2s to-day ; blankets that could be then bought for 8s now cost 14s 6d ; calico and print for dresses at 3d a yard has risen to 6£d per yard ; biscuits have advanced 100 per, cent., firewood 37 per cent., coal 22[ per cent.,, butter 33 ,cont., bread 16 per cent., flour 33 per cent. Prices of meat are not given. The biggest advances appear to be in bootjs and clothing. The purchasing value of the^ sovereign in 1905 in short in Tas* mania has dropped to 14s 6d in 1911. Without calling on the defence, Dr. M' Arthur, S.M., gave judgment yester- ' day afternoon for the plaintiffs in the case of J. and E-. Battersby, paperhangers, v. Joseph DTostine, ranger, both of Petone. The claim was £6 5s 9d for extras in connection with a contract to renovate defendant's house. The Magistrate awarded £3 5s 6ct. Mr. A. M.
