POLICE AND " GRAFT "
ENQUIRY IN NEW YORK MR. GAYNOR'S EVIDENCE MONEY FROM THE LIQUOR INTERESTS. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received September 12, 12.10 p.m.) NEW YORK, 11th September. Mr. Gayfior, Mayor of New York, giving evidence at the investigation regarding charges of graft against the police, admitted that 3,000,000 dollars a year in graft had been paid to the police by the liquor interests. Recently this had been entirely suppressed. While the force was certain to contain a proportion of incompetent, untrustworthy men, the general level of efficiency was higher than ever before. He admitted that burglary insurance rates in New York had jumped 35 per cent, recently.
