ARBOR DAY

MEETING OF HELPERS. . The approach of ' Arbor Day was the reason of a meeting of about fifty persons in the Mayor's room last evenkig. In introducing the subject the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren, who presided), stated that he was glad to be able to welcome those present to the work that was beforo them. The numbers also were gratifying, and he hoped that the effect would be presently seen. Wellington hiiU a great asset in the fringe of hills surrounding the eifcy. With a little heart in the work and with a little 'money spent upon it, the citizens should be amply repaid before long, for without doubt work of this nature reflected itself on the character of the rising generation. On the actual day it would be inadvisable to do much more than plant' two or three places in a ceremonial manner. It would be sufficient to confine this to one or perhaps two situations, and leave the work to be carried on later. There was one section known as section 48, to the south of Victoria College, and anyone coming up_ the harbour would immediately notice this spot, for it was not at' present sightly- On Arbor Day planting would be concentrated on this spot. Mr. M'Laren said that he thought it advisable to form an Arbor League, of which those present could form the nucleus. He did not suggest that they should form a society with a book of rules and formalities. Mr. Barber* also made % plea for the establishment of an Arbor League, and emphasised the fact that after planting tho trees should be looked after with some system. It would perhaps be better to plant trees in enclosures, and to set apart separate acres or portions of an acre for such cultivation. Mr. Field also warmly supported the idea of tho formation of the league, and gave some suggestions as to shelter and the right kind of tree to bo planted. Those present handed in their names and addresses as intending members of tho league.
