BELATED CARGOES

DIRECT SERVICE ISED.The London transport workers'^atrike. has thrown the running of the direct; steamers from London completely out of gear. Importers will keenly feel the delay of a month to six weeks, and possibly mpre> in the arrival of goods which are urgently wanted for the season (as millinery and drapery), or to maintain stocks, or for work in hand, (such as hardware). The Athenic is expected to leave London for New Zealand on 18th July — a month late, and the scheduled date of the departure of the Corinthic. . Whether she will get away or not •is yet to be seen, and it is not known whether the Corinthic will be cut out of the time-table or adhere to it. It is [ hardly likely that these two big liners will be despatched on the same day. The Athenic should have left London on 20th June. The date qf tha Waimana's departure from London is' uncertain, but it is hoped to , get 'her away by 16th July. She should have left in the middle of May. So' that, if she gets away at all by 16th July, she will be two months late. The Rangatira will also bo some weeks late. The New Zealand Shipping Company's direct line has also been hampered by the strikes, to the extent of four to six Peeks' delay. This company's steamers, however, .have very great carrying capacity, which is not usually taxed to the full on the way out, and it is expected that they will be able to carry all the cargo. The Turakinaleft on 4th July, a full ship, and the other steamers are expected to follow her in the ordinary way. The two cargo steamers for Auckland and Dunedin respectively are able to "lift" .an enormous amount of cargo. They will bo from four to six weeks late.
