Fifteen Liberal M.P.'ii, fearing the result of splitting the progressive forces, urged the Master of Elibank to recommend the Hanley Liberal* to «fcand aside and support the Labourite in the interests of the Government's important legislative programme^ The Master of Elibank refused, Baying that he was merely confirming the free decision of a Liberal organisation to contest a seat whose representative from 1906 to 1910 (Mr. Enoch Edwards) had accepted the Liberal Whip.
