Whilst giving general support to the policy outlined in the Governor's Speech, the Auckland Star says : " A more debatable question is the offer of pensions ' in the form of retiring "allowances to members of Parliament who have . served a long public 'career. On thus, subject our opinion is that so long a» such allowances. ay& restricted to men advanced in years, who have represented the electors for a very considerable time, there can be- no objection to the proposal. The salary of a member of the Lower House is not large 'enough to enable him to save much' for his declining years, and it is notorious that any man who conscientiously attends to hi« Parliamentary duties tnufit of necessity neglect his owa affairs for the greater part of the session. In any caee, it would be far (fetter for th« country that some such provision should be made for time-worn legislators than that, as has happened too often in the past, they should be indemnified, for their services by a seat in the- Upper House during the last few year*!' of thcii 1 public life, . .
