TIMARU, 28th June. There has been a. good deal of newspaper discussion lately in support of the idea of starting an art gallery at Timuru. A handsome practical lift was given U> the movement to-day, by, ftlr. and. Mrs.
George Wells, who purchased (out of a collection of 70 water-colours by British artists) nine of the beet at a cost of about £200 to present to the gallery. Previously some classic butts ana a few paintings given by Mr. J. Cragie, M.P., had been obtained. KING'S COLLEGE, AUCKLAND AUCKLAND. 28th June. The proposal to establish King's College,' at present the private property of Mr. C. T. Major, principal, *on a permanent basis, was completed to-night. The main conditions specified by Mr. Major, when making hii. generous offer to hand over the school gratuitously to the citizens of Auckland, were that £20,000 should be subscribed to bo spent on buildings, including a. school chapel. A new bite of at least 20 acres has been secured by a committee of citizens. Acting in conjunction with the- Old Boys' Association, they have succeeded in complying with the conditions specified, with the result that the lai-ge boarding and day school is retained for Auckland for all time. " Pah College," better known as St. John's Collegiate School, is to be amalgamated with. King's College as from December next. FISHING INDUSTRY TIMARU. 28th June. The fishing industry her© has grown to considerable dimensions, five or six trawlers being engaged and numerous motor-launches in deep-sea- fishing. The Harbour Board has erected a special jetty for fishing boats, but this is not largo enough, and, at a board meeting to-day, complaint was made that, though they had spent £600 to assist the industry, the district wae not getting the benefit of th© cheap fish, which were being railed away to Dunedin and Christchurch. It was 6aid that, if the country people did not benefit, the board should take some action.
